Basic: For students who need beginning English for survival situations.
High Basic: For students continuing their studies in English, who are beginning to be able to converse with native speakers of English in everyday, simple situations.
Intermediate: For students who are able to have simple conversations on a variety of concrete topics related to personal interests and familiar situations.
High Intermediate: For students who are becoming more comfortable with the English language, and who are ready to begin using more complex English to discuss opinions, beliefs, and feelings related to more abstract topics.
Advanced: For students who have a good grasp of the language, but need to practice understanding of, and communicating in, more complex information, and who need to work on perfecting their language accuracy.
Additional class details All classes focus on daily communication skills (oral fluency and listening comprehension), community, and Hawaiian and American culture. All classes also focus on practical communication with coursework including: five interchange sessions, a two-hour hula workshop, and a final speaking project.

Class Objectives: Basic Objectives: Students will: A. Listen to 1-2 minute listening passages; understand main topics and simple details; B. Read and understand paragraph-length texts; C. Understand foods, families, and movies of Hawaiian/American culture; D. Ask Yes and No questions about class topics; E. Engage in 1-2 minute communicative tasks (e.g. role plays, skits, presentations); F. Participate in community- based educational activities.
High Basic Objectives: Students will: A. Listen to 2-3 minute listening passages; understand main topics and general details; B. Read and understand 2-3 paragraph-length texts; C. Understand holidays, jobs, and music of Hawaiian/American culture; D. Ask wh-questions about class topics; E. Engage in 2-3 minute communicative tasks (e.g. role plays, skits, presentations); F. Participate in community- based educational activities.
Intermediate Objectives: Students will: A. Listen to 3-4 minute listening passages; understand main topics and specific details; B. Read and understand 1-page texts; C. Understand language, traditions, and tourist destinations of Hawaiian/American culture; D. Ask appropriate questions about class topics; E. Engage in 3-4 minute communicative tasks (e.g. role plays, skits, presentations); F. Participate in community- based educational activities.
High Intermediate Objectives: Students will: A. Listen to 4-6 minute listening passages; begin to understand speaker tone and attitude; B. Read and understand 2-3 page texts; C. Understand history, social issues, and educational systems of Hawaiian and American culture; D. Use a variety of strategies to extend a conversation; E. Engage in 4-6 minute communicative tasks (e.g. debates, presentations, speeches); F. Participate in community- based educational activities.
Advanced Objectives: Students will: A. Listen to 7-10 minute listening passages; understand speaker tone and attitude; B. Read and understand 4-5 page texts; C. Understand religions, political issues, and current of Hawaiian and American culture; D. Use a variety of strategies to show agreement and disagreement; E. Engage in 7-10 minute communicative tasks (e.g. debates, presentations, speeches); F. Participate in community- based educational activities.
